ANAESTHESIA FOR THYROID/PARATHYROID/NECK SURGERY

Neck surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. This means you will be fully asleep during the procedure.
A breathing tube is placed into the trachea (windpipe) to assist your breathing throughout the operation. For thyroid surgery, a specialised tube with vocal cord monitoring is used. This allows the surgical team to monitor the function of the vocal cords and nearby nerves during the procedure, helping to reduce the risk of nerve injury.
Please note:
  • This specialised tube may increase the likelihood of a mild sore throat after surgery
  • Postoperative pain is usually mild to moderate and well managed with oral pain medications
