ANAESTHESIA FOR BREAST SURGERY
Breast surgery is most commonly performed under general anaesthesia, meaning you will be fully asleep and unaware during the procedure.
In certain cases — such as mastectomy or axillary lymph node dissection — an additional technique called a nerve block may be used to improve post-operative pain relief.
This involves injecting local anaesthetic near the nerves beneath the collarbone or on the back using ultrasound guidance. The block is usually performed under sedation, so you won’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.
These nerve blocks can significantly reduce pain after surgery and lessen the need for strong pain medications.
