AFTER YOUR SURGERY
You will be given pain relief tailored to the operation. If strong medication is needed you will receive a prescription to take home.
You may be drowsy or sore and recovery time will depend on the type of surgery.
You will need to arrange transport home with a friend or relative. Unaccompanied travel in taxis is unsafe and contrary to day surgery guidelines.
You will need an adult to be with you continuously overnight if you are discharged the same day. An overnight hospital bed can be arranged if you are unable to organise someone to be present overnight.
You may eat normally, but if you feel nauseous, begin with fluids and light food.
After a general anaesthetic, 24 hours may be required for it to leave your body so, in this period, you SHOULD NOT:

- drink alcohol
- make important decisions eg. sign important documents
- travel alone
- use hazardous machinery
- engage in sports, heavy work or lifting
