EPIDURAL AND SPINAL CONSENT & ESTIMATION OF FEES
My name is Dr Neil Vanza, and I will be the anaesthetist attending to you (or your partner) today or tonight in the Labour Ward or Operating Theatre. Before I arrive, I would like to provide you with some important information.Please read the details below carefully and click “submit” once you have finished.
Epidural & Spinal Anaesthesia
Epidural Analgesia
- Used for pain relief during labour and/or Caesarean section
- A very fine plastic catheter (tube) is placed into the epidural space around the spinal cord
- Local anaesthetic is administered to numb the nerves
- Typically takes 15–30 minutes to insert and start working
- Used for Caesarean section
- A single injection is made into the spinal fluid (no catheter)
- Usually takes 5–10 minutes to insert and start working
Possible Side Effects of Epidural & Spinal Anaesthesia
Common
- Nausea, vomiting, itching, and shivering
- Drop in blood pressure causing dizziness
- Mild headache
- Pain, backache, or bruising at the insertion site
- Partial or complete failure to work
- Severe headache (may require medication or a second epidural if prolonged)
- Temporary nerve damage
- Infection or abscess at the injection site (severe cases may lead to paralysis)
- Bleeding at the injection site (severe cases may lead to paralysis)
- Permanent nerve damage
- Meningitis
FEES
- The fees below are total estimates and do not include Medicare or health fund rebates. They comply with the Australian Medical Association (AMA) guidelines.
An invoice will be mailed to your address after the procedure. Overdue accounts may incur collection fees and be referred to credit agencies.
In Hours (Monday to Friday, 0800 to 2000hrs)
- Epidural: $1250.00
- Caesarean Section: $1650.00
After Hours (Monday to Friday 2000hrs to 0800hrs / Weekends / Public Holidays)
- Epidural: $1750.00
- Caesarean Section: $2250.00
